Spring Clean Your Makeup Bag

Now that Spring is here you may be throwing open windows and cleaning out closets as you perform your spring cleaning rituals. Just as we periodically clean our living spaces, we should also consider having a look at our skin care and makeup products to see if any should be tossed out or replaced.

The best way to start is to decide if this product is one you use frequently. Chances are you have some cosmetics you have never used - perhaps a lipstick or eyeshadow that turned out to be an unflattering shade. Don't waste space storing makeup you are never going to use. If it's new and unused, give it to someone who might like it. If it's been dipped into, best to throw it out.

As a basic rule, you can use this guide to determine what to keep and what to replace.

* Mascara should be replaced every 3-4 months
* Lipstick can be kept for at least a year
* Foundation should be replaced every 12 months if it is water-based, up to 18 months if it is oil-based
* Nail polish should be fine for at least a year, possibly as long as four years, but may dry out before that time if not stored properly

While you're at it, remember that makeup sponges should be washed often and discarded after a few weeks. Makeup brushes should be washed every few months.
